Cynthia Inions is a writer and stylist who is clearly an advocate of this kind of contemporary living as she believes it is more suited to the less formal lifestyle many individuals and families now lead. Inions points out the freedom and flexibility of manipulating space in this way, likening it to the traditional Japanese interior, but working the idea into more Western homes. She focuses strongly on use of light and architectural features and her showcase homes are enviably displayed by Andrew Wood's photography.

On a practical level, the book talks you through structural changes and asks if plans for demolishing existing partitions are realistic and if so how best to carry them out. Inions introduces the concept of zoning your space once you have opened it up. She advises separate zones for relaxing, cooking, bathing, sleeping and working and explains how to make optimum use of your space according to your lifestyle.

Good book to dip into again & again. Modern book that will never date.. Modern classic
Beautiful interia book with modern one space homes. I have read this easy & informative books several times over the years & on other occasions just looked at the pictures. At times I have seen some of the homes in this book in magazines like Elle Decoration & Living Etc The pictues in this book still look modern today & look modern classical even now with black being the new modern colour for the past few year. Just get this book for the text or just the pictures alone.


Sections in book :::why 1 space live, options available, allowing for use as cooking, relaxing, bathing, sleeping & working - each area shows a case study. Also covered is lighting, storage & dividing.


I have used the things I have learned & made my living room (dinning, play etc) into zones allowing multi function without clutter.
