Useful and practical
This book 'does what it says in the tin'. I found it concise, straightforward and without any glaring inaccuracies. Osprey titles are notorious for the latter, which is a pity since such errors are really quite rare. More often out-of-date scholarship is the issue. Fortunately the British have always been fascinated by their enemies and this has led to a plethora of useful information for books such as this one.
My only real criticism is with the photographs, which are really too similar. The majority are of Afghans. I get the reason - lack of photography in earlier wars, but still a bit dull. Other plates are often to small to be useful, for instance the reproductions of battle scenes from the Sikh wars.
The great strength is the usual one - the plates. These are very well conceived and executed. The text was also very clear, and had no 'filler' at all - all useful and well expressed. One of the better Ospreys.
