Review
Perennials require work. Tracy DiSabato Aust is one of the first perennial experts to focus a book on the hard work but in a way that gives the work a clear purpose, even an esthetic goal. This book should be in the collection of every gardener who wants the perennial garden to look its very best...from week to week, season to season, and year to year. -- David W. Kramer "Plant Science Bulletin" (02/01/1998)

Outstanding Book
With just one season of applying her practices, I have concluded that The Well-Tended Perennial Garden is a major breakthrough in perennial gardening books for amateur gardeners. With her substantial practical experience and simple language, the author has successfully used a species by species approach on how and when to prune, deadhead, and otherwise manage many popular perennials. Also, the practical discussion on soil preparation is invaluable.
Those of us who have neither the time or energy to devote our lives to horticultural study owe may thanks to Ms. DiSabato-Aust. My review of several score of perennial gardening books leads me to conclude that the authors were unwilling or simply unable to devote the energy needed to provide such useful, understandable steps to successful perennial gardening.
Excellent... how-to deadhead, shear, etc.
We need more! When to pinch, deadhead, etc. So far this is the BEST perennial 'primer' I have found. There are so many perennials....what to do, when! I found a review in the Portland, Oregon 'Oregonian' and promptly ordered. I have not been disappointed and use this book as a reference.
The Well-Tended Perennial Garden is essential.......
The Well-Tended Perennial Garden is as essential for the truly compleat perennial garden as us his/her spade and pitch fork! I have found this ground-breaking guide to perennial pruning both refreshing and enlightening. I have grown various perennials for more than 25 years and have never pruned and/or deadheaded them, for fear of ruining the summer floral display.... Finally, we all have a unique guide to pruning techniques that will favorably alter & enhance our perennial beds!
