Not quite everything you need to know
Another beautiful book with information to get you started - fabrics and threads and stitches etc - the book then covers Animals and Birds including a Baby Wren, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Siamese Cat, Eagle, Cocker Spaniel, Baby Burrowing Owl and a Wolf. The next section is Flowers and Fruit and includes anemones, apples, Briar Rose, Fuchsia, Dahlia, Pear, Lavender and Tulip. Patterns and info on which direction your stitches should be made all come at the back of the book. All OK so far.
Now try to stitch your chosen project and you have a problem. The one thing insufficiently covered is the actual thread colour placement. The Baby Wren is so beautiful BUT it needs a mixture of nine tonal threads and there are no detailed instructions on which one goes where to create the effect of striping over its feathers, and other shaping, shadows etc -crucial to the success of the picture. One is simply told to follow the illustration! Not what's expected from Country Bumpkin publications. Some projects don't have as many similar shades to be worked so they will be fine, but for those which do it's not good enough.
Take the mystery out of thread painting with this book
I can't rate the A-Z series of embroidery books highly enough and this one is absolutely no exception. It starts you at the basics and really helps you understand the process - after that, well it is practice, practice, practice! Projects from some of the world's best. Excellent illustrations and that great spiral binding that makes this a real working book. Love it.
