Product Description

The Second Edition of this bestselling text once again explores the philosophical underpinnings, history, and key elements of each of five qualitative inquiry traditions: narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study. Written in an accessible style, this book relates research designs to each of the traditions of inquiry. The author compares theoretical frameworks, ways to employ standards of quality, and strategies for writing introductions to studies, collecting data, analyzing data, writing a narrative, and verifying results.

New to the Second Edition:

- Broader coverage of narrative research

- Updated coverage of data analysis, which accounts for programs like Atlas.ti and NVivo, and discusses counting codes more fully

- More specific steps for doing research within each tradition (20090313)

Editorial Reviews

Review
"This introductory research text [...] covers five approaches to qualitative research and compares them side-by-side. [This book] covers the basics in qualitative research; content which can easily be adapted to suit the needs of budding applied linguistics researchers [as well]." (Gary Barkhuizen New Zealand Studies in Applied Linguistics 20071207)

"Creswell does an excellent job categorizing the various qualitative methods into five approaches: narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study...The author has expanded on and updated the information he presented in the first edition of the book (Creswell, 1998), including discussion of the various schools of thought that have developed among qualitative researchers since the mid 1990's...Qualitative Inquiry & Research Design: Choosing among five approaches is a highly informative book; researchers will likely return again and against to the book as they expand their comfort zone within qualitative research."

Customer Reviews

Excellent overview and insights into a complex area5
Those of you struggling to further your understanding of qualitative data will appreciate the simplicity and straightforwardness of this book. This is not to say that this is not a complex book, rather a credit to the author for his grasp of the subject and ability to communicate the central ideas to the reader. Creswell takes this initiative further and applies each tradition to a variety of settings that the reader may find themselves in when conducting their own research projects. The examples used to illustrate are useful and the entire book is an excellent 'bible' for any academic 'qually' out there. I recommend it to my students on a regular basis and they are never disappointed.

Research Methods5
I found this book an excellent way to introduce myself to the research methodologies used by qualitative researchers. Creswell's approach is simple yet detailed. he explains the five main approaches used in qualitative data collection, analysis and intrepretation. He draws from his own wide experience in this field as well as using other peoples research. I found the examples of studies in the appendix and the explanation of deconstruction used by the authors in their analytical section of their research a most interesting and valuable tool. I recommend this book for those who wish to get to grips with the concepts of qualitative researchers. Its a gtreat introduction as well as a valuable refrence work.
