It's a hardback!
This is another book in Viz's series of Studio Ghibli English editions. The other's are 'Porco Rosso' and 'Spirited Away'. Happily I now have all 3 and they are excellent quality. The paper is a good weight and the print quality very good: the colours are vibrant. The books are not illustrated stories, they are artwork used in the movies, including frames, backgrounds, storyboards and CGI. If I say that nearly every page is frameable then you will perhaps get the idea. As an insight into Miyazaki's production process they are invaluable and they are beautiful things in their own right.
Get them while you can because I doubt Viz will keep copies in print for ever and a couple are only available from the USA (via Amazon UK).
NOTE: the 'paperback' claim on this item's description is inaccurate because the cover is hardback. It matches the covers of the other two books in the series which ARE described as hardback.
Amazing creative process for a brilliant anime
I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend whose taste in books and film is actually really good. So I bought this book from Amazon UK knowing I could trust in the opinion I was given, and as it turned out it really is a good book.
Being a fan of anime and in particular Studio Ghibli films coupled with me already owning a number of art books it was unfortunate I never knew about this book previously. From cover to cover it is filled with scenes from the creative process of producing "Howl's Moving Castle" and also includes a complete script.
It doesn't just show the creative process, it tells the story of how they went about developing this animated movie starting with them going on location to Alsace in France, moving on to drawing rough concept artwork and then moving on to design particular set pieces and characters and some of the final pieces.
It really is amazing to see how they produced this fun film and to see what they come up with along the way.Howl's Moving Castle [DVD] [2005]
Beautiful
There's some beautiful and original artwork in this book. It would look great on your bookshelf but even better on the coffee table.
Would recommend.
