A Step Back...
The volume stops the current story development and goes back into the past to show how Kaname and Yuki met. There's a small story progression towards the end of the volume with a new female vampire in tow that sets up an important twist in volume 4, but most of it is just a look back into the characters backgrounds.
This is not a bad thing though as the flashbacks are very good; it's quite sweet seeing young Yuki and Kaname bonding, plus the later flashbacks show a darker side to Kaname's character, as a vampire should have to keep the suspense of the love triangle going. I was also fond of the side story at the end of the book; where normally they don't provde nothing more than a few laughs - this one seems to an extension to the main story.
The art is still gorgeous and the story flows nicely; I'd say this is the best volume I've read so far (I've read the first 4) for having the best story flow with the right mixture of character development and passion between the main 3 heroes. It's not the most action-packed volume but it does sow enough seeds to set up volume 4 nicely. I'd buy this book with the next volume in order to get the full impact of this one. Otherwise you'd feel like you're not getting your money's worth as you'll fly through this volume quite quickly.
If you're new to this series, pick up from volume 1. The series does start off a bit wishy-washy but from volume 2 it does start to show off it's teeth.
volume 3
The third volume of Matsuri Hino's manga still retains the beautiful artwork and gripping story of the previous two volumes, but the story is really starting to heat up now.
A great volume of the manga.
