Product Description

In fashion, one day you're in, the next day you're out...and the day after that, you're back in again. Designers are always referring to fashion's rich history as they imagine its present and future, and retro looks remain ever-fresh as they are renewed - and restyled - for the next generation of wearers. That's precisely what top knitting designer Veronik Avery is up to in "Knitting Classic Style". Mining fashion's endless archive, Avery has created 35 smashingly contemporary knitwear designs that take their cues from decades and designers past. The collection of garments and accessories Avery presents is organized into four thematic chapters that highlight women's wear, men's wear (and its influence on women's and children's clothing), traditional ethnic garb and sportswear.Aimed at both beginning and more advanced knitters, the book's projects range in difficulty from a simple drawstring purse, French beret and Afghan-inspired slipper-socks to a shawl-collared cardigan, a geometric ski sweater based on a popular 1950s Native American design, and Avery's own reinterpretation of the trimly elegant Chanel jacket. The author introduces each project by explaining its historical/cultural roots; Sara Cameron's moody photos evoke the settings that have inspired Avery's reworking of the classics.

Customer Reviews

this new title is highly recomended...5
having admired designs from Veronik in Interweave Knits magazine, I thought I might like this book. I was absolutely right - for once I like every pattern in a knitting book. Usually thereone or two I love, some I like, and many that I know I will just never knit. However this book is very different and I can see me knitting all of the stunning patterns in this book - if I ever have the time! Definitely one to buy, enjoy, be inspired by, and knit from.

gorgeous, wearable designs5
Don't let the title fool you into thinking that the patterns in this book are old fashioned. It's packed with a diverse range of classic garments with a contemporary twist. I was pleased that unlike many designers, the author has written many of the patterns for knitting in the round. The book is great value, with 35 patterns you are bound to find many things you;ll want to knit.

More than I thought it would be4
The "classic style" is simply that: taking classic pieces and techniques, and making them relevant to now. I love that the author was a costume designer, and knows the history of each type of garment presented.
The pattern I made (silk purse) was easy to follow, and even though I am unable to find the yarn suggested here in the UK, it was easy enough to google the yarn, get gauge information about it, and find a similar yarn here.
I have bookmarked about 5 more patterns I want to make from the book, so was worth purchasing for me, especially as I used the special techniques section from this book to help me figure out how to do a tubular cast-on that was required for a pattern in a completely different book.
