A loveable self-contained Manga for Ghibli fans
First and foremost, if you've seen Ghibli's movie "The Cat Returns" you know what to expect here. If you liked the movie, you'll like the book, and if you didn't, well, don't expect to like this either. The film used this book as its basis, and it's very much like reading a storyboard of the animation, with only a few significant differences (which I leave lovers of the film to discover for themselves).
Like the film, this is really aimed at a younger audience, but is nonetheless good fun for anyone who doesn't get too hung-up on maintaining high opinions of their maturity. It represents great value for money as a self-contained manga that resolves itself nicely by the end, and as an easy to pick up and put down version of the film. It is quite pacey, but is nonetheless very easy to follow. Most commendably, Aoi Hiiragi does a beautiful job illustrating her story, rivalling the images of the film that ghibli made, even though they have the advantage of colour and movement. The illustration is very detailed and very consistantly drawn. This makes it a perfectly valid alternative to the film, so that having viewed either version before the other won't really harm your experience.
Classic Kids Manga - Or just for the young at heart!
This was the basis for the hit Ghibli anime.
I adore all ghibli work and Cat Returns is a pretty faithful adaptation of this manga. It's ideal for readers of all ages, young and old!
Haru is a teenage girl with a habit of being late and is kinda drifting through her life, until......her daring rescue of a cat. The cat turns out to be a prince from the Kingdom of Cats. Now the Cat King has a bizarre way of showing his gratitude to Haru, which she is not too keen on!!! Much hilarity ensues as Haru enlists the help of the cat business office, the Baron Humbert von Gikingken and his sidekick, the utterly fantastic Muta.
A brilliant tale! With plenty of funny bits, the facial expressions are fab. This also includes special short story of the Cat King and a glossary of the Japanese sound effects! One of my favourites, great for cat lovers too! Muta-saaaan! You can also get a nice colour picture book of the story too.
