ClusterXL and HA missing?
Having not read the book yet and only skimmed through it I found it strange not to see any references to these two important features (ClusterXL and Management High Availability).
For this I would have to warn people against using this book as a sole reference or study guide.
This is significant also because these are real exam topics. Besides being important considerations in the upgrade considerations and procedures.
not going to set the world on fire with this one...
Having been using checkpoint for many years now, I just bought this as quick start overview of the new version of cp...
At times it does read like "please give us a job checkpoint" or a checkpoint infomerical/ sales presentation....yawn yawn yawn...
For someone new to the product its ok, but dont take it as gospel everything will work as it does in the book.....some of the examples arent very real world......
A solid introduction to NGX
Make no mistake, NGX is a huge product. It's become pretty difficult for one book to cover all of it in depth. What this book does do though is give the reader a solid introduction to the product and the new features added since previous releases.
On the whole it feels pretty well written and laid out. I found the FAQ and summary sections at the end of each chapter to be much more useful and informative than the average certification book for example. The instructions on how to setup & configure NGX are also less 'hand-holding' than such books, a more relaxed approach which I personally preffer.
However, if you want to use this book to prepare for the CCSA and/or CCSE exams you'll need as much hands-on as possible so it pays to continually reference the product when working through the chapters, ideally using the evaluation software on Smart Platform and paying particular attention to Check Point's exam objectives.
On the whole then, 4/5 for this book. Certain sections felt a little 'light' or lacking in depth, possibly due to the size of the product. An example being Chapter 11 on VPN's. The obligatory spelling grammar & spelling mistakes don't really spoil it and the technical accuracy seems pretty good.
