"Yadderwal Balance" series book 14
Hafwyen of the Flowers; Princess of Yadderwal (aka Wyen) is fully aware of the curse of the royal family; that they must be bound to "The One", their soul mate or the world will cease to exist. Wyen, a scholar and historian has little belief in a soul mate and has been using narcotics to enter the Dreamworld, her only reprieve from her empathic abilities. For many years she has encountered a young man in her dreams; however believing him to be just a figment of her imagination she remains unaware that every time she wakes and shrugs off his existence, she shatters the heart of her "One".

With the attempted assassination of her parents, the world quickly shows signs of decay; the only way to halt the destruction is if Wyen finds her soul mate. At last realising her dream man is in fact her "One" (duh), Wyen has no idea of how to trace him after realising in all the time they have spent together in her dreams, she never thought to ask his name.

By the decree of the Gods, Yestin is forbidden to contact Wyen or help her in any way to find him. The Princess however has retained enough knowledge of their conversations to trace him, and it certainly doesn't hurt that Yestin's brother has co-incidentally arrived on the scene and offered himself as a "Hopeful", a male hoping to be recognised as Wyen's soul match. Yet a dark enemy is determined to wield powerful sorcery to circumnavigate ancient lore and take the Princess as his own. Wyen must battle treacherous acts, dark enchantments and physical attacks to unite with Yestin and save their world.

Wyen is a mass of contradictions; one moment she is kicking a** with a double bladed staff, and the next she is sinking swan like into the snow; waiting for her man to come and save her. Her physical tie to a dying world and a heavy besiegement of enchantment aimed her way helps explain her dramatically drained strength during the climatic battle against her enemy; however I unfortunately found Wyen to be quite passive throughout the majority of this book; crying a lot, moaning about the fates and not quite believing she has a perfect match; despite the fact that it's universal knowledge only one man will ever complete her. She states she wants "a man to complement her; not complete her" at the start of this book, but by the time she physically meets Yestin; she's more than happy to promptly plop all her problems into his lap and expect him to save the day; hardly the behaviour of a woman fated not only to rule, but save their world.

Despite my issues with the heroine lacking the savvy and feistiness I normally enjoy, I found "Sudden Fall" to be an entertaining read; capturing my interest enough to keep an eye out for the sequel's paperback publication "Whispered Promise".
