Okay: a serial killer on the loose, rural community with a dark secret, it all goes back to the past: we've all read that a hundred times before. Well told but not original. Virgil Flowers is midly intersting but no Lucas Davenport. All in all just average.

I had to force myself to finish reading this. Not the greatest Sandford book I've read. Parts of the plot stretched credibility to extremes I thought. Characters with little interest, an effort at times to keep track of what was going on.

I feel the two other reviews...4
..are a little unfair. Yes, this does not measure up the best of the Lucas Davenport series - what could? But Virgil Flowers is an interesting and appealing protagonist, the setting is a little unusual and the back story intriguing. I thoroughly enjoyed it and won't hesitate to seek out sequels.
