A useful companion
Lonely Planet books off vast amounts of general information (from the best expensive restaurants to the nearest laundrette) as well as some touristy guidebook gen. This particular volume was a welcome friend, with a particularly useful section on the Hermitage and a handy guide to the Russian alphabet and vocabulary. The maps are useful, although the lack of index to street names is a drawback. The author recommends particular places, but the streetnames do not always figure on the maps and it's often difficult to find them anyway. The book is extremely well written - highly informative but also tremendously witty. It really is worth reading even if one isn't going to St Pete's! This book is a must for visitors to the city.
st petersburg - lonely planet guidebook
this is one of the most comprehensive guidebooks to st petersburg around. it's up to the usual high standard of lonely planet with good maps and a wide section of russian vocabulary.
an overly economic guide book
For a guidebook that is focused on a single city, this book is very summarised and not up to date. Very little, if any cultural references to the major landmarks such as Hermitage. Very limited choices when it comes to restaurants, bars and clubs. Not recommend at all.
