A word for any new fans - buy this first.4
One of Simon Furman's few UK stories to deal solely with present day Transformers, and it's great. The three stories making up the 'City of Fear' storyline ('City of Fear' itself, 'Legion of the Lost' and 'Meltdown') have stuck in my mind all these years while other stories - notably, most of Bob Budianski's US tales following the death of Optimus Prime - faded from my memory until recently. It's a fantastic tale involving Transformer zombies, a mad Autobot scientist and Decepticons proving heroic, and stands up to being read through adult eyes. As a starting point for new readers, this is as good as any - self contained, exciting and hugely enjoyable.

The other stories here don't quite meet the main trilogy's standards, although 'Deadly Games' comes close, 'Firebug' is a cute throwaway, 'Kup's Story' is a great one-off and 'The Fall and Rise of the Decepticon Empire' is the last truly worthwhile UK story, involving Megatron's return to Cybertron.

City of Fear....4
Having read and still have the original comics(from the UK),I found this collection to be excellent as most British TF stories were. If you're a fan of the originals then you'll love it!!

A great UK story that doesnt feature Galvatron5
City Of Fear. Written by legendary Transformer scribe Simon Furman this tale was released when Marvel UK was at it's best and Transformers was at its highest in both popularity and creativity. City Of Fear was also a breath of fresh air in it being one of the first UK stories in a while not to feature Galavtron or other members of the future cast.

Opening like a horror story the initial arc creates a mystery on what has happened in the Cybertron city of Kalis and why there is talk of reanimated dead Transformers stalking the land. Ultra Magnus and the Sparklers investigate but the mystery only gets deeper involving an insane Autobot scientist, a dead Wrecker and the plans of a former tyrant that Furman would once again revisit in the first War Within saga. A great story (set exclusively on Cybertron-shows Beast Machines the kind of stories they could have been telling) with some fantastic artwork (don't let the cover image put you off as it did a friend of mine) from Jeff Anderson and Robert Smith.

The rest of the material in this volume is filler to be fair and not that great (though still better than most of the Budinsky stories). Just consider them extras to the main tale.

Overall City Of Fear is recommended for any fan of Transformers. For readers familiar with the UK material it is another step towards the climax of several storylines in Time Wars. For newcomers this serves as a nice introduction to the style of the UK stories.
