In a world where cooking has become increasingly complex it is perhaps an opportune time to demonstrate that simply prepared and cooked food is as good, if not better than the complicated offerings recently in vogue. For years the best kept secret has been that many of the best dishes are in fact perfectly simple. This applies to both the flavour and the preparation. The quality of the ingredients comes first and the preparation and the cooking concentrates on bringing out the natural flavours. The recipes are classics not only because of their enduring appeal, but also because of their timeless quality, such as Soupe a l'Oignon, Steak au Poivre and Summer Pudding. This collection of mouthwatering recipes is a resource to return to again and again.

Customer Reviews
from an enthusiastic amateur
The general feeling I got from this book was one of total enjoyment of cooking for family and friends. The recipes are quite straightforward and the ingredients can be easily found in any local supermarket.
Cookery books should inspire and comfort in equal measure and most people, I included, need to feel that we can at least try out recipes that look magical on the page. This book does just that !
Inspiring
I bought this book as a present for someone, but I liked it so much I had to keep it.
The photographs are beautiful, but this is not at the expense of the good recipes with adequate descriptions. Each recipe is complemented with descriptions and suggestions. Furthermore, since recipes are generally simple, and use ingredients that are usually close to hand in most kitchens, a casual flick through the book usually yields a meal within an hour, without having to scour the shops for obscure ingredients.
I would thoroughly recommend this book to any keen cook.
A book I use all the time
This is great. It has all the best, simple recipes that you want to cook at home, from onion soup to roast beef to coq au vin to lemon cake. Nothing is over-complicated, the recipes are accurate and work every time. Home-cooking as it should be. I use this all the time and highly recommend it.
