Lauren Child is an exciting fresh illustrator, with four other books for Orchard. Lauren has also worked as an assistant to Damien Hirst and ran her own company designing lampshades. She lives in North London.

Clarice comes out top again!
As we read Clarice Bean books using different voices for all her famiy and friends, My Uncle Is A Hunkle, is a particular joy because we get to go American!! My children love this story because once again, Clarice's phrases and quirkiness are exactly how they see themselves in the world. The illustrations as ever are a delight!

More fun in the Bean household! Mum has to go to New York, and Dad has to go away on IMPORTANT BUSINESS. So who looks after Clarice, Marcie, Minal, Kurt and Grandad while Mum and Dad are away? As a last resort Mum calls in Uncle Ted. After only two days of normality Chaos takes over.

Albert the Guinea Pig gets lost, Minal has an accident and Grandad wanders off.

Lauren Child's book is a long way removed from the pastel coloured world of traditional kid's books. The illustrations are full on, with clever use of photomontage with text and type-fonts that go every which way. Most children will get a kick out of the very stylish layout and quirky humour. You can really believe that young Clarice wrote this book. All young readers will certainly enjoy her latest story.

Can you talk like John Wayne?
this book brings out the best in the mum in you and the best in the daughter in you - you just have to fall in love with this great hunk of an uncle who hasn't a clue but he's a real John Wayne hero anyway. Practice that american drawl, you will need it for when he speaks.
