Product Description
This is a critical edition of the correspondence between the two poets, R. S. Thomas and Raymond Garlick, shedding light on their poetic vision, spiritual beliefs and political theories. It is an edited collection of 155 previously unpublished letters from one of the 20th century's greatest poets. It presents a trenchant, vivid and often humorous commentary on 20th century Anglo-Welsh literature, English poetry and Welsh politics. This book contains biographical and background notes on the letters by Jason Walford Davies. Illuminating references to individual R.S. Thomas poems and their wealth of hitherto unknown biographical information, offers fascinating insights into the work of this major poet. This title includes Thomas' revealing comments on the work of other poets - e.g. Dylan Thomas, Ted Hughes, John Betjeman, W.B. Yeats and Geoffrey Hill. It will undoubtedly appeal both to an academic and a lay readership. R.S. Thomas' international reputation as one of the finest poets of the 20th century means that there will be an audience for the book in Europe and also in the United States, where interest in Thomas' work is well established and increasing. This title is a significant contribution to our understanding of the career of a major lyric poet, written in an accessible and readable style.
