Fast paced death!
As the title suggests the story is set on the war-torn world of Armagedon. The Imperials are fighting hard a new ork crusade although this time things do not look very promicing...
The backbone of the story is based on a "revenge crusade" of the Black Templars chapter. The marines have set out to avenge their fallen brothers and finally the orks responsible for their death are found on Armegadon. You can guess what's coming next...
The book is not all about the Templars. We get to witness the fight fromt the eyes of a Titan Princeps and a low-life grunt. The "three" viewpoints of the story converge towards the end of the book where the usual final (and bloody) battle takes place.
The narration is of the highest quality. This divition of the story is a huge plus as the way that the marines, the princeos and the grunts each view warfare is quite different.
There is little (close to none actually...) plot here. But this is not a disadvantage as the action is so fast paced that you will hardly notice the absence of intrigue.
My only complain is the size of the book. This is quite a short story and despite having enjoyed it i found myself feeling (in a good sense) cheated. Adding one or two small battles could not be much of a problem. Well, one can not have anything...
If you are after a well written and typical -at the same time- Warhammer novel go for this one.
Sad addition to the Wh40k world
I an a player and fan of the gaming system, and there are a few good novels out there, I recommend Grey Knights and Execution Hour.
Crusade for Armageddon is a none stop action story with about as much plot as a Hong Kong Kung Fu movie. The action is about the same, a small group of marines takes on a army of greenskins in a frontal assault where everything works out for the marines and nothing for the greenskins. There is no suspence and nothing to surprise.
If the above is your idea of a good read go ahead.
For me it was a waste of time. Well below mediocre.
Oh! and by the way Warhammer critics, go easy on the 5 stars, they are for the exceptionally good, not the mediocre.
