Synopsis
"Ready to Read" is a series of twelve reading books designed to develop the confidence of young children between the ages of 5 and 7. Using familiar and new tales, the fun texts complement the child's more formal learning. The National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 in reading, writing and speaking guides the text and is behind the range of activities that are at the end of each book. Many of the stories are told in rhyme, and others have rhythmic, rhyming sections. In most books, certain phrases are repeated to encourage the less confident reader. The text is positioned on pale colours to help dyslexic readers. The newly commissioned child-friendly illustrations complement the text, reinforcing the humour found in it. At the end of each book a range of activities encourages the child to think about what they have read, retell it in their own words, and talk about it. It is written by well-respected and published authors.

Example of text:-
`There once was a miller, who lied to the king,
"I have a sweet daughter called Geraldine.
She turns yellow straw into gold with one spin!"
The king locked the girl in a room full of straw,
Saying, "Spin me gold or you'll die for sure."
Geraldine wept. Then guess what she saw?
From a door in the floor a little man sprang,
"Spin straw into gold? Why, do it I can!"
"Give me your necklace and I am your man!".....'
and so the tale continues in the usual way.
The greedy king wants more ...and more.....and, running out of things to give, Geraldine is forced to make a final promise she comes to wish she hadn't!
Can she solve the riddle in time?
From the back page/cover:-
`This book is designed to be fun for children who are just starting to read on their own. But they will enjoy and benefit from some time discussing the story with an adult.......

The chosen font increases word-shape recognition.......
Coloured backgrounds are in line with current advice on making reading easier for children with dyslexia.'
