At once thoughtful and passionate, Jem Poster's poetry explores areas of perennial human concern. This collection acknowledges the trickiness of our negotiations with whatever lies beyond the immediate reach of language and logic.

Customer Reviews
light and warmth
Having come across Jem Poster's exciting and unusual novel, Courting Shadows, I turned to this collection with some eagerness, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. Like the novel, it addresses issues close to my own heart - concerns about the environment and explorations of memory, imagination and human relationships. The poetry shows a painterly attention to detail - plants, birdlife and scenery are lovingly depicted - but there's always space behind these details for the things which can't be said. The poems are deeply engaging - it's as though the poet is addressing us personally, inviting us into his world and sharing it with us. The poems are densely structured and sometimes richly ambiguous, but always accessible. This is a remarkable collection, and I strongly recommend it.
