Synopsis
Leo Rosten wrote his first tale of Hyman Kaplan when he was 24 and it was published to great applause by the "New Yorker". Over the next two years the magazine ran all 15 of the original stories that were eventually published in 1937 as "The Education of Hyman Kaplan".

Customer Reviews

Funny, intelligent, winning.5
This is one of the best and most memorable books I have ever read. It charms you because it is funny without being vicious, something increasingly rare nowadays. My mum read it as a teenager having picked it up in the local library, and when I reached the same age at which she had read it, she gave it to me. Recently I loaned a tape version of it to my boyfriend, and he found it as funny as I do, but as he studies linguistics and is an assistant teacher of German, I'm not surprised!

A twentieth century classic!5
Hyman Kaplan Mr 'Pockhill' and classmates are immortal. Leo Rosten is the grand master of phonetically rendered dialogue.

These hysterically funny books are also as important to the meaning and experience of immigration as dozens of scholarly and worthy tomes on the subject-perhaps more so.

Bravo Leo Rosten!

Deserves to be re-read5
I first read this book in high school 40 years ago and recently re-read it. It is every bit as charming now as it was then.
