Sexy, gutsy and intoxicating, these tales tell of the pleasures of dancing the two-step at the Stockgrowers' Ball, the pity of stalking beautiful beats and, of course sex, love and loss. This stinging-fresh collection opens up new worlds - of high deserts and Alaskan tundra, of perilous white water, the frozen rockies and of 'cowboys' and strong women. These women - part daredevil, part philosopher - know they should know better, but they don't; they wrestle within themselves, with danger and above all with their men whose bodies speak volumes, but whose emotions are not so communicative.

Intoxicating Trip Into the Unknown
From the first page of the first story this book reels you in and won't let go. Simple yet deeply meaningful language and vivid imagery. Houston knows how to write a story with real meaning and truth. You don't have to love cowboys or hunting to love this book. Highly recommended.
Vulnerable but strong
Great sense of place and people in Pam Houston's stories. The women are strong but human, humane, vulnerable; the stories are fun, full of life and guts; funny and pacey. They're set in unusual locations but they make you think a bit more about your own life. Great!
