The most famous conversion in history - when Saul became Paul on the road to Damascus - was a trick. It was actually Jesus appearing to him. Jesus did not die on the cross but was rescued and sheltered by his brother James, by Peter and by Peter's wife, Mary Magdalene. But they prefer to keep Paul in the dark because, although he is mistakenly preaching that Christ rose again, at least it keeps him busy and gets the Christian message out there...Now, imprisoned by Nero, Peter finally tells Paul the truth before they go to their deaths as the first Christian Martyrs...

About the Author
Howard Brenton was born in 1942 in Portsmouth, where his father was a policeman and a lay preacher. He had written several plays for the Royal Court, the RSC, and the National before Romans in Britain (1980) was famously the cause of a (failed) prosecution by moral crusader, Mary Whitehouse. Pravda (1985 National), co-written with David Hare, was a brilliant satire on press tycoonery. His last main-stage project was Faust for the RSC (1995), since when he has been a lead writer on TV's Spooks.
Customer Reviews
Some will say Controversial - I say 'thought provoking'
This is a fascinating play - I went to see it on stage on Staurday night and my mind has hardly stopped mulling it over since. I bought the text then and there and have read it twice. A fascinating and thought-provoking text. I have an undergraduuate degree in theology from Oxford University and feel that this man knows his onions. Whilst there is the obvious degree of artistic licence, I was, overall, confident he'd done some historical/theological research. I also come to this play from a standpoint of faith and it is challenging. But there was nothing here that Bultmann didn't tell us 50 years ago - it is however, somehow more challenging to see it in a mainstream and theatrical setting. The text is also littered with the beautiful, or as the Book of Common Prayer calls them, the comfortable words of St Paul. And Brenton really does give them due reverence and praise, even though he writes this from a standpoint of non-faith. Well worth the read - even better to see the play. Be warned however, you will not stop thinking about it!
