Beautiful juxtaposition of verse and photography
R S Thomas, lately lamented poet, and skilful photographer Hope Jones have combined to paint a sketch in words and pictures of a celtic paradise island off the coast of N Wales. Except that the beautiful pictures and the harsh poetry shout a conflicting message. Alongside the photographs which speak of a God of beauty and love are poems which sound a different note:
"Here there is no sleep / for the dead, they are resurrected / to mourn."
Nonetheless a truly beautiful book - immensely evocative for those who have visited Bardsey (Enlli, its Welsh name, the Island of Tides), and tantalising for those who as yet have not. It would not have harmed to give longer extracts from Thomas's amazing poetry. Surely the best Poet Laureate we never had.
"From what was I escaping? / There is a rare peace here."
Lovely book
This is a beautiful book, full of stunning photographs of this fascinating island, all with a counterpoint of poetry by R.S. Thomas. At just over 80 pages long, it definitely leaves you wanting more.
