A little disappointing
I bought this book for my 4 year old daughter who is just starting to be interested in "chapter books" and I have been looking for something contemporary and "magical" to start reading to her. I found it had the perfect balance of text and pictures for her purposes and she did seem to find the story interesting enough to sit still and listen and want to find out what happened next. However she was a bit put off by the lack of any "girl" characters (the only female character in this book is the mum and in another one we read, there was only Mrs Giant). Also I thought the tone was a little contrived, eg, the continual "This is how it happened". Should appeal to 4-5yo readers/listeners interested in fantasy though.
