Editorial Reviews

Review
"I use and learn from this book constantly; it still sits beside my desk... There are chapters on garden history, sculpture, plot management, private gardens, allotments, landscaping. I found it opened my eyes when I couldn't see beyond the end of my own nose"

The Dame on a garden bench...4
It has been ions since this volume was first published 43 years ago. Although revised, it is still traditional in its appearance, reserved in its manner and careful in its approach.

Crowe takes us all the way through; it is historically correct. Yet as a mentor, this has been a primal source for many designers working in the landscape, both in the UK and elsewhere. Crowe's authority is appealing, as there were hardly any female designers at the forefront of design throughout recorded civilisation!

Although careful, Crowe is much in love with her subject matter, and that shines through time and time again. Consequently, the book is appreciated by aficionados as well as pros. The volume's sentimental value is overrated, though, as it was one of only a few serious publications on landscape originating in the British isles in the post-WW2 era.

For a personal tour - join the Dame on the garden bench. She might be gone, but she is still near by... Dame Sylvia Crowe (1902-1997)
