Product Description

Italy, the birthplace of the Slow movement and the home of Slow Food, is the second destination in our new Slow series. We have handpicked 46 exceptional places to stay - places where attention is lavished on some of the most important things in life: convivial meals, community, friends and family, a respect for the environment and a celebration of regional distinctiveness. From the mountainous north, through cypress-dotted Tuscany and on down to the gutsy, colourful south, you'll discover an unmatched passion for Slow Food and Slow Travel. You will meet farmers, literary people, wine-makers and craftsmen - all with rich stories to tell. Go Slow Italy celebrates fascinating people, fine architecture, history, landscape and real food.

About the Author
A pioneer in the environmental world, Alastair Sawday has had a remarkably miscellaneous and varied career, which has taken him to the most far-flung corners of the globe: he headed up a VSO programme in Papua New Guinea, ran a disaster relief team for Oxfam in Turkey, and has run a small travel company, conducting walking tours throughout Europe. It was this that inspired him to publish his first travel guide, French Bed & Breakfast, after discovering various ‘special’ B&Bs and the extraordinary people that run them.

Customer Reviews

Another winner from the Sawday stable!!5
This is the most amazing book and helped us in deciding which places to stay when we toured Italy and Sicily this summer.
As always the Sawday recommendations are accurate, informative and exactly the places we enjoy staying in.
All the families we stayed with were charming, friendly and most of all the food was delightful. We were made to feel part of the family and were given lots of inside tips on where to go and what to see.
This book is more than a guide of where to stay but is an inside track into italian life and culture. Worth every penny.

A Must Read5
Simply a must read for anyone who loves Italy. I can't believe how relaxing it is just to read about these wonderful places. I can't wait to visit some of them.

...and relax5
The Alastair Sawday series of "special places to stay" has introduced my family to a host of quite remarkable places and people over the years and has long been considered the place to start when looking for that somewhere special.

This new addition goes a step further and introduces us to a way of life shared (and celebrated) by a number of Italian property owners. This quite sumptuous book tells tale of a simpler way. It offers up consideration of the better things in life - and we can dip into this slower life as the book offers 46 quite magical places, some B&B, some with self-catering, but all offering a chance to pause and slow down.

Travel tips for getting there and getting about by train are included - what's the hurry?
