Often seen as dark and gloomy, oils can, in fact, be used to create colourful and light paintings that are wonderfully expressive. One significant characteristic of oil paint is its richness and depth of colour, something that is of particular interest to Nicholas Verrall. Immediately striking in all his pictures is the skilful way he handles colour to interpret the special qualities of light and mood found in a certain moment in time. In this book, he discusses his working methods and the importance of colour, at the same time placing these issues within the general context of painting in oils, with all that this has to offer."Colour and Light in Oils" includes information, demonstrations and many inspirational finished paintings to help painters understand the value of colour in interpreting ideas with feeling and impact. It provides guidance on a wide range of skills, techniques and advice on subject matter and associated topics. Illustrated throughout, the book covers: the medium of oils; understanding oils; materials and equipment; painting techniques; and the studio.Explore the value of colour while interpreting ideas with feeling and impact. It shows how to use oils and create colourful, light and expressive pictures. Verrall is one of the UK's most respected contemporary figurative painters. It is presented new in paperback.

Customer Reviews
Sumptuous colour and light
Lovely book - so many 'How to paint' books are by so-so artists but Nicholas Verall's handling of light and colour is wonderful to see. Plenty of tips on paints, mediums, brushes and subjects and many insights into the artists' working methods. My only gripe is that the book could have done with a more detailed 'step-by-step' demonstration to illustrate the use of underpainting and complimentary colours that Verral does so well. Still a good read/insight into oil painting techniques.
Colour and light
A superb book for any oil painter interested in representing colour, shade and light and a great help in deciding on shape, form, colour balance and aerial perspective
Beautiful
I don't paint at present but this is a beautiful book with lots of invaluable techniques and tips. A worthy resource.
