Well-written, but a bit shallow as a mystery story...
Ray Sharp, charged with doing some due diligence work, stumbles upon criminal activity associated with illegal trade in Cambodian relics.

A corrupt general is Sharp's target but there are a host of other colourful characters. Sharp can't help but stay in trouble and some of the stupid things he does frustrated me at times. As a crime novel the book doesn't really take off and leaves a lot unanswered. Sharp plods to get to where he has to in the end but nothing ever really plays out as a thriller.

This is otherwise quite an engaging novel in that Stone paints a very interesting picture of life in Asia and especially Cambodia. He writes with good knowledge of that environment as well as good doses of humour.

In short, the book is good at the social level but failed to excite me as a mystery novel. 7/10
