CD Description
Subtitled "The Helsinki Concert", YOU CAN'T DO THAT ONSTAGEANYMORE VOL. 2 was recorded in Finland in '74. It's the same band as heard on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE, which was released a couple weeks prior to this concert. However, with another year of roadwork under their collective belt, the band's turn-on-a-dime quotient is cranked up quite a bit. Hearingthe differences in the five songs which are found on both releases offers a telling glimpse into the growth of this crack sextet. Their familiarity with the material allowed them to internalise the complex blueprints and really flourish asensemble players. As they shift effortlessly from dense thirty-second note call and response games to orchestral landscapes, it's possible to forget that there are only six musicians running the train. Among Zappa's audience, this band rightly remains one of the most cherished of his post-Mothers ensembles. This two-hour set allows one the luxury of hear the true shape of one performance.

You HAVE to hear this...!
I searched and searched for this recording of what is ultimately the Roxy & Elsewhere set, played with a smaller band. The Helsinki Tapes play capture the liveness probably better than Roxy. The musicianship is even better than Roxy, as the band personnel had been touring the set for around a year. Features Chester Thompson on drums (my all time fave Zappa drummer), NMB on vocals, flute, sax and bizarreness, George Duke on all things keyboardy, Ruth Underwood on percussion(playing some of the fastest chops I have ever heard), Tom Fowler on bass and of course FZ. The humour in this recording is raw, the playing so sharp u may cut your ears, I cant recommend this album enuff!!!!
You mean you don't own a copy??
You need this in your life. Over two hours of the most sublime and uplifting music you will ever hear which will have you dancing like such a fool that the neighbours will worry about you. If you do nothing else before you expire then please listen to this. It's for your own good
One of Zappa's best!
Having heard most of Zappa's material from the late 70's onwards, this was the last of the YCDTOSA series that I bought. I wasn't expecting much, but this album was a revelation. Many consider this line up to be one of the best Frank ever assembled, and I have to agree, it's awsome. The guitar work on Inca Roads and RDNZL shows Frank at his best. If you like 'One Size Fits All' (also highly recommended), this is an album you're sure to enjoy.
