Shankar, on top of the world.
This 1967 'LIBERTY' recording captures Ravi Shankar at an exciting time in his life and musical career. The 'Beatle Guru' was now a star, and the entire world his stage. Of course, he had been accused of 'selling out', and raga purists were beginning to voice discontent. What was Ravi Shankar doing reducing ragas in length ? Why was he experimenting with Western forms? Why was he so freely mixing Karnatic and Hindustani music ? This record should be allowed to speak for itself. Shankar's beautiful sweet tone is a joy on RAGA BAIRAGA, a lovely 5 minute raga, which remains respectful of the tradition, yet accessible to newcomers. NATA BHARIRAVI is another delightful sweet toned morning raga, where Shankar and Allah Rakha stretch out a little longer and produce music of rare perfection. What a magical pairing these two were!! The longest piece is a wonderful performance of the sunset raga MARWA. Here we witness some majestic playing from Shankar, with beautiful tone and resonance during the alap, reminding us that Shankar is rooted firmly in the Maihar Gharana style, and far from breaking with tradition, has a deep awareness of , and reverence for his heritage. Often his sound gets close to that of a bin (veena), and often we feel that there is a glorious suspension of time....the music is free of the almost continuous chikari sound that is characteristic of the Imdadkhani style. A lovely record, then, which should offend no purists. It remains one of my favourite Ravi Shankar records nearly 35 years after its release. If you don't have any Shankar, this is a perfect place to start.
Superb Chill Out
Recorded when the Beatles and Stones were well into experimenting with the sitar, this album is a classic introduction to their friend and collaborator's brilliance.
A superb soundtrack to any setting where peace, tranquillity and generally mellow vibes are required or desired. Simply play this and feel those vibes almost instantaneously.
It's a shame that albums were generally so much shorter in the 60's - this could easily have gone on forever!
