At the centre of LeapFrog's philosophy is the importance of encouraging children to learn, and to create the environment and the experiences necessary for learning to take place. To this end, the Phonics Radio (one of a range of pre-school learning aids) is designed to make learning fun and to prepare children for school.

The Phonics Radio plays tunes aimed at teaching letters and phonics. Thirty songs and rhymes are included as well as a mystery tune game, which together teach letter names, sounds, and the association between letters and objects, and sounds and words. For example, press "R" (for Rabbit) and it plays "Row, Row, Row your boat"; press "O" (for Octopus) and it plays "Old MacDonald".

The Radio is brightly coloured, eye catching and robust, complete with carrying handle on top, just right for little hands. LeapFrog recommend the radio for children aged 18 months and above, but help will be needed by those at the youngest end of the range. An extremely good instruction booklet accompanies the radio, which adults should read and retain. This is an excellent, educational toy, and one that should provide hours of fun. --Susan Naylor

Nice compact educational toy
I bought this for my son last Christmas in the US. It is small enough to take in the car on in a bag when you want something to occupy your child when you are out and about. It has a two volume button so it can be adjusted for sound. It has turn over pages like a book but they are made of plastic and the hinge appears to be very durable. The pages have the letters of the alphabet on them with a picture to illustrate the letter. When the button beside the relevant page/stroke picture is pushed the toy states the letter, its phonetic sound and a word starting with the letter. It has a game facility which enables a child to push the button next to the letter that a word starts with. It also plays the alphabet song. In my mind this is a good value educational toy and well worth the money.

Fun with learning
We bought this for our 18 month old son for Christmas and he absolutely loves it. He sings along (tries to anyway) with it and it is really easy to use. Our 3 year old son also likes playing with it. As he can talk he copies what is said, which I guess is what it is all about.
