Syn - 'Syndestructible' (Umbrello Records) 3 1/2 stars
Until very recently, I was never aware of this band. This 2005 reunion release isn't as good as their 'Original Syn' record but it's still very decent. A worthy reunion of two original Syn members, Yes bassist Chris Squire and vocalist Stephen Nardelli. Best described as well-produced progressive. Better tracks are "Some Time, Some Way", the Yes-like "Reach Outro", the snappy "City Of Dreams" and the intricate thirteen-minute "The Promise". The rest of the personnel: Paul Stacey-guitar & vocals, Gerald Johnson-keyboards & vocals and Jeremy Johnson-drums. Might appeal to fans of (I'm second guessing here) Tomorrow, Primitives, Yes (of course) and Lower Third.
love it!
From the samples I've heard and the full version of Cathedral of Love, this is the kind of music I love.
Complex but simple, beautifully constructed, great vocals.
The lead singer has a voice that draws you to the tracks.
Love it!
Splendid album !!
Squire is back for real this time ! What a wonderful album !
Forget the plastic modernism and rather unmemorable songs of Conspiracy added with heavy synthesizers arrangements (in my humble opinion), the songs on Syndestructible are very nice, melodic and memorable; the arrangements are simply basic as should be in rock (i.e. bass, acoustic and electric guitars, drums piano, Hammond and discrete electronic keyboards ), with occasional orchestrations.
Nardelli’s voice is very effective and match very well with the music, beautifully augmented by Squire notorious backing vocals. Needless to say Squire’s bass playing is creative and melodic as ever !
A splendid surprise this album indeed, I wish the band every success ! Eventually a worthy successor to Fish Out of Water for Squire, but this production is a cohesive effort by all of this “bunch” of talented musician.
“Virtuosisms” are not a mere “show up”, but are well inserted and fit in effortlessly in musical textures.
This is a classic CD that one listens to all over again, it never happens frequently nowadays.. it is simply almost perfect !
If you like first Yes albums (say until Fragile) and the….. Who (!?) you might like this one as well but this is “pure” music which cannot be labelled by a specific genre…would you label Beatles for instance….?!….
