Editorial Reviews
Album Description
JS. Bach's called his four orchestral suites "overtures" after the name of the first movement of each piece. This title actually signifies the function of the music, as these suites were generally used as an opening for events such as celebrations, opera or cantata performances or orchestral concerts. The "Suites" themselves basically contain a series of dances, and in line with their French predecessor's of the 17th century these are usually marked by a dotted rhythm and play as a succession of quick, slow, quick movements.
The early Music Magazine 'Goldberg' refers to Diego Fasolis as "one of the stars among conductors of baroque music", and wrote about his performance of the Monteverdi Vespers also for the Arts label as "radiant and vigorous".
This particular recording of the Bach Suites, available as a SACD hybrid, has already received some glowing reviews. Classics Today writes while giving this a 10/10 recommendation:
"In short, these are beautifully realized, stylish, and humane performances with a genuine point of view. Listening to this disc is a joy from beginning to end, a tribute to Bach and to the enduring freshness of these perennial favourites." [4/24/2006]
