The Times, (Geoff Brown), July 13, 2007
(4 stars) Delivered with immaculate bounce. Note their splendid
mode of attack: strong but never aggressive.
Album Description
The Accademia Bizantina was founded in 1983 in Ravenna in
Italy. In the 1990's the harpsichordist Ottavio Dantone joined the
orchestra, and in 1996 the Accademia decided to appoint Dantone as its
musical director and significantly extended its repertoire, dedicating
attention to research into baroque styles and performance techniques. The
ensemble has made several recordings for the ARTS and Decca labels which
have won many prestigious awards around the world.
This is the first volume of a two part set which features all of Vivaldi's
opus 3 string concertos known collectively as "L'Estro Armonico". Alongside
the sequence of works known as "The Four Seasons" this group of pieces
features many of the most successful and popular of the composer's works.
Vivaldi gives the twelve works in his opus 3 a symmetrical structure, and
they are divided into four groups containing three concertos each, one for
four violins, one for two violins, and the last for one. Therefore the CD
presented here, which contains the first six pieces of the set, follows
this pattern.
