Product Description

A comprehensive and up-to-date overview of soft and hard diffraction processes in strong interaction physics. The first part covers soft hadron—hadron scattering in a complete and mature presentation. It can be used as a textbook in particle physics classes. Chapters 8-11 address graduate students as well as researchers, covering the "new diffraction": the pomeron in QCD, low-x physics, diffractive deep inelastic scattering and related processes.

Editorial Reviews

Review
From the reviews: This monograph is a very high quality up-to-date review of soft and hard diffraction processes in strong interaction physics. We can divide this very interesting book into two parts. The first part covers the Chapters 1-7 and can be used as a textbook in particle physics classes. The second part covers the Chapters 8-11 and can be used by graduate students as well as researchers. I think that this book is useful for every particle physicist. (Journal of Computational Methods in Sciences & Engineering) "This monograph gives a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of soft and hard diffraction processes in strong interaction physics. … It can be used as a textbook in particle physics classes. … It presents recent results and experimental findings and their phenomenological interpretations. … addresses graduate students as well as researchers." (ETDE Energy Database, 2003) "The purpose of the present book is to present the main insights which have mentioned the growth of high-energy diffractive physics in recent decades and also to present the recent state of the art. … This monograph is a very high quality up-to-date review of soft and hard diffraction processes in strong interaction physics. … I think that this book is useful for every particle physicists." (T. E. Simos, Journal of Computational Methods in Sciences and Engineering, Vol. 3 (1), 2003)

From the Back Cover
This monograph gives a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of soft and hard diffraction processes in strong interaction physics. The first part covers the general formalism (the optical analogy, the eikonal picture, high-energy kinematics, S-matrix theory) and soft hadron--hadron scattering (including the Regge theory) in a complete and mature presentation. It can be used as a textbook in particle physics classes. The remainder of the book is devoted to the "new diffraction": the pomeron in QCD, low-x physics, diffractive deep inelastic scattering and related processes, jet production etc. It presents recent results and experimental findings and their phenomenological interpretations. This part addresses graduate students as well as researchers.
