Customer Reviews

one of the best this year5
cant see why no one else has reviewed this disc yet. superb interpretations of lal watersons songs. manages to capture the essence of what is so appealing about lal . i never bother to write reviews , but felt i had to just this once . buy it i say.

Like a dog walking on its hind legs...3
...one applauds the effort, but is it well done?

To be fair, Lal was always going to be a very hard act to follow, so distinctive was her style and I seriously do applaud the attempt but I find the results very disappointing.

King Creosote makes a very decent fist of 'Fine Horseman' and I like Richard James' interpretation of 'Memories'; there are also decent versions of 'Cornfield' , 'So Strange is Man' (I like Lavinia Blackwwall's voice!)and 'Dazed'.

Many of the other tracks are pretty poor. A lot of them, starting with James Yorkston's 'At First She Starts' are taken at a positively funereal pace - so slowly that one almost loses track of the melody!

I was surprised at Charlotte Greig's own contribution; this is a singer for whom I have high regard, surely she could have done better than this.

Worth hanging onto - just - I hope some of the versions may grow on me, although I doubt it.

Poor packaging too - cardboard slipcase.

Disappointed1
I have been watching and listening to members of the Waterson family ever since I started going to folk clubs in the 1960s. The songs on this album are wonderful but as for interpretaion and production, words fail me.
