Fatality
Firstly let me say I am a big DC fan and I love MK so this game was really something that caught my eye. The best thing about this game is playing as DC characters without a doubt. Playing as Batman or the Joker or Superman or whoever is really really good fun. And some of your favourite MK guys are back too and looking better than ever. Thats another high point of the game, the graphics are good. Battle damage is cool. As fights progress costumes and bodies get damaged and this looks great. The engine for the game is pretty solid too and it does feel like the hits are more real than compared to other MK titles. However there are some major drawbacks- the first is there is only one stance for each character unlike the last couple of MK games where you could have two or three. This limits the amount of different fighting moves you can master. Also some of the characters look way too similar when they fight, catwoman and wonderwoman for example look pretty much identacle. This being said there are lots of variations like deathstroke and barackas blade(s) (which is almost a second stance) or the jokers combination specials (which are just awesome). MK characters probably offer more variation in style than DC ones. I also found the game somewhat unfair in terms of what characters can do. Captain Marvel for example has so many special moves compared to say Green Lantern. (This was really disappointing for me as I love GL and he only has five specials- and considering he has a ring which should allow him to do anything this didnt feel right for me.) That being said Batman, the Joker, the Flash, Superman etc play just the way you want them to. There are new modes like close combat and aerial combat as well as test your might- these are all really fun additions to the game and allow for some real devastation. Another draw back is the fact that you cant skip the cut scenes in story mode- very annoying. Still the story mode is decent and arcade mode is as always so nothing is lost there. This game is best though when playing a friend either online or on the couch. There have been promises of downloadable content too so this game could keep on giving characters and new arenas etc. The draw backs being what they are this game is still a good beatem up with good presentation and high fun factor since DCs inclusion. Just wish they had The Martian Manhunter.
Great Fun... just needed more unlockable features.
The story is well done, the choice of fighters is limited when comparing the older Mortal Kombat games but for me i thought it was right for the story of the game. There really is only one bad point about it, that is extras. there is nothing to unlock other than the two boss characters at the end of each story. this gives the game some what of a simple presentation about it. extra characters for vs modes and actual different costumes would have added that little bit to make this seem like a well stocked game. Otherwise though you are given the main characters that you would have mainly played with from both sides MK and DC and an interesting story that flows with action. the characters great and so much fun to fight with especially the likes of the joker, the flash, subzero and many others. the game can be addictive if you admire the concept. to put it in simple terms this is a great playable movie.. just a shame there were no speacial features.
Fun for an hour or two
MK vs DC is definitely a solid little game, with excellent graphics, some new ideas and an interesting premise... but offers barely any bang for your bucks.
There are 20 characters plus 2 unlockable, but no other unlocks, no character creation mode and no other game modes (unless you count the combo challenges which are essentially practice mode with prompts) - not even any alternate costumes !
This is a pretty shocking omission considering the MK universe is rife with characters who are basically just palette swaps with alternate projectiles, and the DC universe offers just as much potential for simple fan service (e.g. Bizarro, Zoom, Sinestro).
The engine is solid - though I did found the basic XBox controller to be a pain for inputting special moves (forever jumping when pressing sideways) - and the story mode production values are definitely a new high for the DC series.
Complexity has been thoroughly eliminated however, with all fighters reduced to 1 stance, 2-3 hit combos and 5 or so special moves apiece.
Overall ; MK vs DC is just horrible value for money compared to both rival & previous games - rent, avoid or wait for the sale of the century.
It is a genuine shame too, because if the effort had been put into to bring it up to modern standards this title could have been a contender.
