Amazon.co.uk Review
Once you’ve won the lottery you don’t go throwing the same parties you used to when you were on a two-cans-of-cider student budget--you lay on a spread, you let people know what you’re packing these days. It’s a sentiment that runs right through Folie À Deux, Fall Out Boy’s fifth and most audacious studio album. Having already expanded their sonic palette way beyond emo with 2007’s mega-selling Infinity On High (and to a much more successful extent than peers Panic At The Disco with their mainstream-chasing Pretty. Odd.) they really go for broke here, not only racking up track after track of glitteringly anthemic sing-along action--while also somehow managing not to betray the muscle that made them famous in the first place--but also visibly parading a line of notable guests in case you were any doubt as to their status as rock A-listers. Elvis Costello, Travis McCoy and members of The Academy Is... and Panic At The Disco crop up in cameos on Aerosmith-esque ballad "What A Catch, Donnie", all singing lines from previous Fall Out Boy tracks. We told you it was audacious. Lil' Wayne stamps some style on the Michael Jackson pop verse of "Tiffany Blews" and Debbie Harry duets the album to a close on "West Coast Smoker". Elsewhere, out of the VIP room, "America’s Suiteharts" still gets noticed by walking over ELO’s "Mr Blue Sky" in Foo Fighters’ boots and "I Don’t Care" throbs like the tattooed cousin of "Spirit In The Sky". --James Berry

CD Description
The fifth full-length album from arena-filling, Des-Moines pop-punkers Fall Out Boy was announced in a typically dramatic style, with band leader Pete Wentz leaving a series of cryptic clues across the internet leading up to the date of the 2008 American Presidential Election. Wentz has revealed Oasis as an inspiration for the album, as well claiming it has'folk styles'. It is preceded by the singles 'I Don't Care'and 'Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet'.

Evolution done right4
This is the latest in a line of albums for Fallout Boy. This does not mean more of the same music, but rather an evolution over every previous album, something other artists often try to do but with mixed results. A lot of reviewers state they don't like this and miss the old sounds, but I for one am glad they've moved on from the more generic music they used to create. Now we have mixed styles within each song which certainly distinguish them, at the same time their music has become much more accessible to the public, where as previously Fallout boy was almost entirely the premise of teenagers.

There is certainly a much more punchy baseline in all the upbeat tracks, where as the Infinity on high album had virtually none in comparison. The guitar shows some dexterity and while maybe not the best composed music, certainly has the catchiness quality. Vocals are strengthened yet again and the dexterity displayed puts other singers in this genre to shame. While nearly all the upbeat tracks are excellent I don't seem to like any of their slower songs in this album due to their unmemorable nature, but the rest of the album more than makes up for it.

I wont comment too much on individual tracks as frankly I cant remember the names of them properly, windows media player doesn't seem to fetch the track names when playing this CD. There are maybe 2 or 3 stand out tracks in album amongst a generally strong standard. A lot of flack has been given for their attempt to cover Beat it, but I think credit is due, even though the MJ version has a timeless quality to it, I can understand that some one who didn't grow up in the MJ decades would easily think the fallout boy version the better version due to heavier production values. One thing I wish they had properly recorded is the cover of American boy by Estelle and Kanye West, which they wonderfully performed a single verse and chorus for in their 2008 concerts.

This album is not perfect but a very solid effort overall with diverse sounds and a creativity ethos that other bands should learn from.

Another great album from Fall Out Boy4
I have listened to the entire album a few times over, (don't ask how I obtained it) and it is another great album from FOB.
They have gone in a slightly new direction with this record, with many musical influences aparent. From the 80's synth stabs of "Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet" to the jaunty duet with Panic At The Disco's lead: Brendan Urie in "20 Dollar Nose Bleed" the album is full of interesting and lovable songs. My personal favorite being "Tiffany Blews".

However the album does have it's down sides. While great, it is not as good as their classic albums "Take This to Your Grave" or "From Under the Cork Tree". It just doesn't feel like an album should - the songs are all so different that there just doesn't seem to be general thread holding them together. While there are some excellent tracks, there are also a couple which I would consider skipping past in the future.

All in all, a brilliant album in it's own right, but just doesn't stand up against some of Fall Out Boy's earlier work. A must for any FOB fan and open-minded music lovers alike - but be sure to give it a few chances as many of the songs are growers and will need more than one listen to really be appreciated.

Dead In The Water1
There is good reason to be sad today.

Messrs Stump, Wentz, Trohman and Hurley, having produced two of the
noughties most vibrant albums : 'Take This To Your Grave' (2003)
and 'From Under The Cork Tree' (2005) have abandoned or lost the magic
which made Fall Out Boy one of the finest bands of their generation.

The big slide began with 'Infinity On High' (2007). The insidious
draining away of all that spontaneous, pent-up, hyperactive energy -
the undignified downward spiral into the middle of the road.

'Folie A Deux' is a huge disappointment.

The overall sound of this 14 track collection is dense, turgid and
grossly overproduced. Anodyne stadium rock of the most vapid kind.
The melodies, choruses and instrumental arrangements are tired
repetitious echoes of this once-great band's glory days.

There's just too much happening. All the time.

From the portentous opening bars of 'Lullabye/Disloyal Order Of Water
Buffaloes', with its' sub Townshend guitar riff, it is apparent that we
are going to be in for a bumpy ride.

'Coffee's For Closers' has a fatally unnecessary string arrangement
clogging up what might have been a pretty good song.

'What A Catch, Donnie' is a shabby hackneyed ballad - those strings
again and painfully poor piano and lead guitar contributions.

Vocal harmonies are continually muddy and overcomplex. 'w.a.m.s',
'Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet' (with its'
additionally ghastly orchestral arrangement) and 'Tiffany Blews'
are particularly bad examples.

The studio rendition of Mr Jackson's 'Beat It' is a pale reflection
of the concert recording on the '**** : Live In Pheonix' album.

'American Suitehearts' is the only track to have held my attention.
A well written and convincingly performed song capturing just a
little of the verve and imagination embodied in their earlier work.

Doubtless hardcore fans may be less discerning and will wish
me hung by the neck until I am dead but for the less certain
visitor to this site caution before purchase is strongly recommended.

I wanted the magic but the magic has gone.
