DVD Description
Director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy, Evil Dead series) returns to the horror genre with Drag Me to Hell, an original tale of a young woman’s desperate quest to break an evil curse.
Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, Professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer), and get a leg-up on a promotion? Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home.
In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) to save her soul from eternal damnation. To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: how far will she go to break free of the curse?

Customer Reviews
Possibly for Raimi fans only...
The first 40 to 60 minutes of this film are genuinely terrifying. For me, the atmosphere reached such levels of intensity that I more than once considered walking out of the cinema -- and I'm usually quite indifferent to these things. But the film's rhythm -- despite some lazy plot holes -- is so brilliantly realised that it's hard not to feel the knots tightening in your stomach. Sadly, the tone then shifts into more comedic fare that will doubtless please fans of Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy, but may also alienate those who had been enjoying a truly unsettling horror film that steers clear of the current trend for so called "torture porn."
This is, without doubt, the most entertaining horror of the year
Remember watching the Evil Dead trilogy all those years ago? Welcome back!
Director Sam Raimi is finally returning to his roots after neglecting his incredible love for the horror genre for so long; for too long, in fact. Drag Me To Hell is his new masterpiece- It's a crazy, hilarious, utterly terrifying and frequently surprising thrill-ride. You'd never believe a horror film could be this much fun!
It's centred on a young female loans officer, Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) who refuses to extend a loan for old Mrs Ganush (Lorna Raver) in order to somehow impress her boss and gain a promotion. In retaliation, Mrs Ganush inflicts a curse on Christine, transforming her simple life into a living hell.
Is it cheesy? Yes. But is that unintentional? No.
As always with Raimi's films (Evil Dead, Spider Man, etc) the action comes thick and fast to an almost cartoon-like extent, with a hint of the very darkest of comedy. Some scenes are so incredibly shocking you'll be confused at whether to laugh or to scream- either way you'll be hysterical on many occasions.
This is what Raimi does best: His ability to genuinely shock on such a regular basis is something that many modern horror directors should be jealous of. In Drag Me To Hell, he does this in a number of various ways. The score -of which he co-wrote- is a large element of his success, as are the special effects; but most of all: The completely horrific and totally insane ideas!
There's only one word to describe someone who can make talking demon goats, projectile nosebleeds and living eyeballs in birthday cake genuinely scary... That word is genius.
Also, performances are generally quite good; damsel in distress Alison Lohman does a decent job in an admittedly very difficult role and the ever-reliable Justin Long is great in playing her nerdy boyfriend. I have to hand it to old Lorna Raver, however, who successfully scares the balls off you as the bony faced, black toothed, frosty eyed and truly frightening Mrs Ganush.
I could go on forever about how much I loved Drag Me To Hell, but in summery, this is exactly what Sam Raimi fans have been waiting for all these years. There's enough shocks, scares and crazy ideas to ensure that you'll laugh and scream in equal measure.
Spread the word: Drag Me To Hell is not only Sam Raimi's new masterpiece, but the most awesomely entertaining horror film of the year. Watch it if you're after a damn good time.
A brilliant psychological horror movie
This is not your average horror movie when stupid teenagers get killed one after the other this is a mature well directed and almost perfect horror movie which is a good as a B movie can ever get.
Even for those who don't usally enjoy horror this will come as a welcome surprise .The acting and tension is very good ,there are a couple of unpleasant events but the rest of the scary parts are done very tastefully.
Alison Lohman is a likeble victim and has a bright future in acting ,reminds me od Naomi Watts in "The ring".
A 4 1/2 stars horror movie.
