An emotional & Soulful instrumental album
Joe Satriani is without doubt a very fine guitar player, but he is by far a greater musician. His skill in arranging and composing is equally as strong as his guitar playing.
I have heard almost all of satriani's recorded work and have to say that this album does feature as one of my favourites. He shows a depth of emotion in his playing that is so soarly missed in this genre of music. A work of passion, emotion and heart & soul.
Joe gave it a go...
Joe's self-financed album was a labour of love. Released in 1986, he evidently tried too hard.
Its shortness -under 40 minutes- is not the worst thing about this album.
All the tracks are buried under synth effects, it wouldn't sound out of place as a backing track on an 8-bit NES game. Joe's skills are undoubtably here, a lot of talent went into making these songs, but at no point is a clean guitar heard.
I've heard some of these songs live (no background effects) and they truly are superb.
But the fact is: this album is not easy to listen to.
Unbelievable First Album
This may not have the production of his later albums, but this is still one of Satriani's most inventive, and hey the recording was paid using his credit card! It has some of his best pieces, often using more guitar layers to combine melodies than the later albums.
As one of the first guitar 'god' albums, it's a must for any one who considers themselves a fan of guitar music.
