Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Joe Satriani has long been one of rock's most respected guitarists, but outside of his fellow axe-men, he's never really achieved much success--or respect. Engines Of Creation is another attempt by the guitar god to change all of that. Utilising a full palette of electronic effects and beats, Satriani lays a foundation over which he can showcase remarkable skill. Unfortunately, the result can't help but sound more than a little tacked-on. Rather than a seamless blend of electronic music and guitar virtuosity, Engines Of Creation jumps back and forth between the two. A promising beat is interrupted by a challenging riff, or a display of guitar wizardry is let down by weak backing, and the result falls far short of anything resembling a tune. Man, that Joe Satriani can really play guitar. It's just too bad that he can't--or won't--play any songs. --Ted Kord

Customer Reviews

The Guitar is a tool for sonics5
It has often been said that to appreciate Satriani's music (or his contempory Mr Vai) you need to be a guitar player yourself.

But after reading the backlash of reviews from guitarists I have come to another conclusion. To appreciate Satriani's music you have to be a "musician" not just a guitarist. There is a difference.

"Engines of creation" is a sonic masterpiece that is very creative - if you are after txt-book riproaring acoustic tunes then look elsewhere, else your shredding image of satch will be broken.

Satriani composes, and it just so happens he uses the guitar. If he were to write a symphony without guitars then it would still be satriani and incredibly creative.

Everyone (especially guitarists) loves a balls to the wall guitar solo - but satch gives us this in plenty anyway - so I say to people who criticise his so called change of style listen to the sonics, not the guitars.

Engines of Creation4
Another innovative Satriani album! However, for real guitar prowess, I was a little dissappointed. It somewhat lacks the original JOe vibe! But you have to hand it to this man, he has the guts to try something new, and this album shows that!Sure, it is a bit 'techno' but who else in the world would try such a thing??Ultimately, if you want something new and innovative, buy this album, but if you enjoy original Satriani, then there are better albums, especially the early ones!!
Best tracks: Engines of Creation, Devil's Slide(imense solo)

Skillful, beautifully textured and well recorded5
Criticising this album for a lack of melody or tunefulness is missing the point - it's not melodic or tuneful, and clearly not supposed to be. Instead, the album concentrates on delicious, dense textures of sound - guitars, synth and percussion - all executed with breathtaking skill (especially the guitars, of course!). Equally impressive is the recording quality. Unlike many albums with no natural accoustic, the sound is spacious, as well as being detailed. The bass, though deep, is given a natural and balanced presentation. Play this on a good hi-fi, and play it loud.
