2006's SUPER COLOSSAL is the 12th studio album from guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani. The master shredder still traffics inarena-sized hard rock instrumentals that provide plenty of room for his melodic, technically dazzling solos. But Satch mixes things up, too, with sunny, country-tinged riffs ("It's So Good"), atmospheric jams ("Ten Words"), and bittersweetlove songs ("Made of Tears").
While a record of guitar rock instrumentals might seem in imminent danger of growing stale, Satriani manages to keep things interesting, not only by varying his stylistic approach but by utilizing a wide vocabulary of guitar sounds and effects. And, naturally, guitar players and aficionados of six-string wizardry will find plenty to admire on nearly every track here.

Does what is says on the tin
Excellent. Not a duff track on the entire thing.
Yes, Joe has mellowed out a bit and some of the tracks are getting a bit jazzy but so what. This is superb stuff and not to be missed. Excellent production values and played through a decent system ROCKS!
Many people who have heard Super Colossal have asked who it was and have gone out and got a copy even if I had to write SATRIANI down on a bit of paper for them.
Track 13, Crowd Chant, is a bit of work aimed at the fans, designed as an audience participation number which it must be said is rare for an instrumental band. I certainly cannot wait to see Joe on his impending UK tour where that has got to bring the house down.
Anyway once again Joe is back on form and we guitar stranglers and wannabee shredders can only say this: We are unworthy.
A return to form!
After being a massive fan of Joe's work for about 15 years I was a little disappointed at his output during the whole 'Engines Of Creation' phase. Fearing that was the way forward I anxiously bought Is There Love In Space and Strange Beautiful Music which were both improvements. This album however is a different prospect altogether.
I questioned whether he could return to the sort of form that brought us Extremist and Crystal Planet, but I was convinced after the first listen!
This is some of his best work of all time. If you want ear bleeding Malmsteen-esque speed thrash nonsense then look elsewhere. This album is a work of art. Beautiful melodies abound in tracks like The Meaning Of Love which will transport you back to Surfing and Flying, the albums that made Satch truly great.
'A Cool New Way'? I don't think so. A Cool Old Way is a better way to describe it. This album is a reminder to us all that Satriani is simply THE best. Buy it and you will not be disappointed.
melody, atmosphere, virtuosity
My favourite Satriani albums so far were Crystal Planet and Strange Beautiful Music, in some more "techno" moments Engines Of Creation. Album I don't really like is Is There love In Space? In general I like some of his havier stuff, not so much his "love songs" - exception is definitely Love Thing.
His new album is all about BIG SOUND. I felt like I was on the stadium where I'm on the stage on my own and the whole audience is playing guitars, just massive.
There are some really good tunes like It's So Good or Redshift Raiders, some very melodical ones like Ten Words, lovely Cool New Way and than some "normal" ones like Meaning Of Love. The best thing about this album is that the more I listen to it the more I like it and I hope it will be like this for all of you who will buy it.
I wouldn't say it's his best album so far but it's definitely one of the very strong ones. And you should have it!
