Everything you need except the tools!
This is probably the best book I've seen on guitar making and there are a good few around. Cumpiano shows not just how to make a guitar, but how to make and maintain tools and jigs - he talks through the reasons why he does what he does - he explains wood, how to cut it, store it, recognise it - and how to arrange the workshop. Quite honestly I don't think there's much in this book that is not explained. Even if your real interest is in making another stringed instrument, there is a great deal to be gleaned here. The illustrations are excellently chosen, showing clearly and in detail the themes treated in the text. What's not to like? :-)
The best by the best
Probably the definitive book on guitar making by one of the best guitar makers in the world. The time, love, care and excellence that William puts into making his guitars is transfered into this book. This book will not only give you a sound start in guitar making it will also inspire you years from now. His methods can be hard at times but only because he expects you to strive for the same quality he does. Anyone using this book to make their first guitar or their 100th won't be disapponited.
Excellent intrdution to guitar making!
Cumpiano et al have taken on a massive task inporoducing this book. It gives comprhensive step by step instruction fo r building a classical and steel string guitars. Great photos and usefull hints and tips that lend insight into the Luthiers art. A great reference book, I have it close to hand all the time. For the English reader the American tone can sometimes be a bit of drawback, some of the terms take a little decyphering, hance only four stars and not five. A well laid out and usefull boook that should grace the shelves of every aspiring Luthier!
