Something like a perfect artistic union is achieved in the major components of Paris, Texas: the twang of Ry Cooder's guitar, the lonely light of Robbie Muller's camera, the craggy landscape of Harry Dean Stanton's face. In his greatest role, longtime character actor Stanton plays a man brought back to his old life after wandering in the desert (or somewhere) for four years. He has a 7-year-old son to get to know, and his wife has gone missing. The material is much in the wanderlust spirit of director Wim Wenders, working from a script by Sam Shepard and L.M. Kit Carson. If the long climactic conversation between Stanton and Nastassja Kinski renders the movie uneven and slightly inscrutable, it's hard to think of a more fitting ending--and besides, the achingly empty American spaces stick longer in the memory than the dialogue. Winner of the top prize at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. --Robert Horton

Winner of the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1984, Wim Wenders's PARIS, TEXAS tells the haunting story of an amnesiac (Harry Dean Stanton) and his struggle to rebuild his shattered life. Featuring a story by Sam Shepard and a renowned score by Ry Cooder, the film also stars Nastassja Kinski and Dean Stockwell.

Vapid nonsense with superficial classiness.
The storyline is unconvincing and without logic. The acting is amateurish; characters are stilted in behaviour, their speech separated with long pauses which for me doesn't make pregnant with meaning, just boring. Camera-work is posed, self-conscious and arty - loads of shots of Harry Dean Stanton (Travis) in profile musing, agonising craggily, driving through the night etc etc. Some vistas. And Ry Cooder's score matched the film.

Every SINGLE shot in this film is like a beautifully composed and lovingly crafted photograph. I defy anyone not to be moved by the cinematography alone, not to mention the beautifully told, heartbreaking story and amazingly understated, and emotionally charged perfomances.
If you feel nothing watching this film, you are not a fan of cinema.
Oh Dear God
Deceived by all the excellent reviews I decided to rent out this "classic" and was ready to enjoy a masterpiece. Having been so unbelievably bored out of my head for the past two hours, I have decided to write my first online review on Amazon (yes, the film ist still going on...). There is not much I am able to say as I have lost the will to live. Except for a couple of half hearted moments, this film was (is) completely pointless and a waste of time.....
