Customer Reviews
Nice print of an old film but rather bland
Karloff did a number of MAD SCIENTIST films and this is one he did for Columbia studios. In it he plays a scientist seeking cures for illness via a method of freezing the patient in suspended animation. He becomes trapped in his own freezer and is brought back to life 10 years later only to continue his research in a manic fashion, crazed with a desire for knowledge.
Sadly the film sounds more interesting then it really is, most of the action takes place in some deep, underground rooms and its all rather laborious and dull, especially the last half hour. Karloff could perform a role like this in his sleep and despite his best efforts he cant win against a tired cliche ridden scrift, uninspired direction and a poor supporting cast.
Its a very nice print of the film though and will go well with the ICONS OF HORROR BORIS KARLOFF set which features 4 other Columbia films. To end on a positive note, Boris has a nice beard in this film!
Frozen Horror Unfrozen Suspense
After reading previous reviews I was almost put off from buying this film but I have to say, after seeing it, I was glad that I did. It certainly wasn't as bad as I was led to expect. The restored quality for this DVD is really good and clean, the acting isn't as dated as some films of the era either!
I quite enjoyed the film all the way through; Karloff is on fine form with thought provoking motives for his behaviour - a kind of needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few morality. Not totally evil more misjudged with his own motives.
The film is more mystery suspense than outright horror, although a creepy island, a deserted house, skeleton, frozen tombs and the obligatory thunderstorm is included. Although I more prefer the horror genre I still enjoyed the story and wondering what was going to happen next throughout the film and as someone who enjoys films with Boris Karloff I wasn't disappointed. - Keith Pickering.
