Knights of the Grail: A Comprehensive Guide to the Land of Bretonnia
One of the better sourcebooks available. It provides detailed information on the history and geography of the Bretonnian region. The book is filled with ideas for many new adventures, and also includes a good selection of new creatures, from the lowliest kind to mighty foes. It conjures up a rich and colouful atmsophere, and makes a fair superior roleplaying enviroment in comparison to the Empire. Well done Black Industries.
An expected disappointment
Given that WFRP is largely shadowing the GW battle game (WFB), the direction and content of this sourcebook should come as no surprise. The problem is that without an awful lot of work, this background can be viewed as nothing other than a pseudo-arthurian rip-off. One can't blame the author though, who tries to inject a bit of dissonance between the chivalric ideals of the nobility and the grinding poverty, injustice and expoitation of the common peasant. There is also some scope for conspiracy theorists, with the hinted at but never stated role of the Wood Elves of the Loren forest as master manipulators. However, it just doesn't feel like material for the warhammer world, at least the one many of us are used to. If you want to play with Arthur et al, there are games out there that are far better, such as Pendragon.
This sourcebook is not a dead loss, it has some useful information and is redeemable. You'll just have to engage your creative muse for a few months.
