Better than I expected
I was very dubious when I first heard that the rights to Bonkers had been sold to UMTV, the same giant responsible for the currently wayward Clubland X-Treme Hardcore series. Bonkers always used to be the series that purists relied on for keeping hardcore hard and shunning the attempts of other series (such as CEH) to commercialise our genre. It's slightly ironic that they managed to sell out to one of the most commercialised dance labels out there but that's beside the point. Onwards with the review.
Sharkey's mix is the choice cut by a mile. The mixing is good but the highlight is the track selection. It's much harder and less cheesy than either of the other disks but keeps just enough in so as still to be euphoric. I'm listening to it right now for the second time in two days and, I have to say, it's great. Everything from the acoustic intro to Kevin Energy's uplifting message at the end that "Freeform Will Never Die" is done very well. The best track for me was Al Storm's "Jumpin'" and I can't wait until this gets a proper release.
Moving onto Chris Unknown's mix which kicks off, just as you've come to expect from cheesecore today, with a hardcore remix of a dance classic (LMC Vs U2 - Take Me To The Clouds Above). The remix, I'm disappointed to say, is just like the disk itself: very mediocre. Coming from one half of the infamous Sy & Unknown duo, I would have expected something much more uplifting. I've always been a sucker for a bit of cheese but the cheese on display here wasn't anything particularly special. However, it's nice to see Unknown doing something on his own (something he seems to be doing more and more lately) because in the past, Sy has always been the pick of the pair.
And finally onto the "Boss" of hardcore, Hixxy's mix. Wow, way to scam us by using tracks that are years old and have already been mixed too many times. This is genuinely really bad. When buying an album like this, you should expect AT LEAST a third of the tracks to be new material but none of this is! There really must be problems going on in camp Raver Baby, no new releases so far this year and not even any new stuff for his Bonkers disk. Further proof of why Raver Baby doesn't deserve its reputation. Shocking. (It's also partly UMTV's fault for allowing this recycled crap to be sold, I suppose). In fairness, the mixing is okay and the disk is enjoyable enough because it features classics in their time but this is not what I expected!
Awesome
This is the best hardcore CD of the year -09. Really good songs and perfect mixing, awesome.
Best in a long time
One of the best Bonkers from the series in a long time with it going back to how it used to be. AATW has done an amazing job of bringing back the Bonkers brand and if they are like this I hope there are plenty more to come.
