Mostly inspired
The idea of a Mostly Autumn album based on The Lord of the Rings seems somewhat appropriate. There is enough Tolkienesque grandeur in band's music, the atmosphere is just about right and, indeed, the group has already given us glimpses of how Tolkien material translates convincingly into music ("Out of the Inn" and "Helm's Deep"). Thus, in theory, "Music Inspired by The Lord of the Rings" is a marriage made in - eh - Lothlorien.
In practice, the rush to get the album released in time to coincide with the premiere of the film of the book makes this a bit more earthly affair. At its best, "Music Inspired by The Lord of the Rings" is simply excellent - and for some curious reason, given the vocal talents of the group, it is during the instrumental sections of the CD that this project really shines and warrants the use of the word "inspired" in the album title. This is not to say that the vocal tracks are not good, because they are, but - let's face it - none of them can reach the dizzy heights of the best Mostly Autumn tunes ("Shrinking Violet", for instance).
This is a really good album, but somehow I think that they could have come up with a better one, given more time.
