Customer Reviews
Mediocre Swedish power metal.
Nostradameus have been on the metal scene for a number of years now and have gained respect not only in their homeland of Sweden, but also in the global arena, albeit on a small scale. The band have been very consistent over the years releasing six albums thus far in their career, with `Pathway' being the latest slab of metal on offer here. Nostradameus play a traditional blend of typical European power metal played at a frenetic up-tempo pace, combined with powerful vocals, screeching guitars and a strong rhythm section.
Like most bands these days, there are distinct influences and Nostradameus do not escape these comparisons lightly. The opening track `Wall of Anger' has a very strong Iced Earth feel to the guitar work, but I think this is more coincidence than deliberate. I can also hear scatterings of Judas Priest as well, but this is mainly due to the intensity of the music and nothing else. Furthermore, the more noticeable and biggest influences that are blatantly apparent, are from fellow Swedish power metal bands Nocturnal Rites and Morgana Lefay.
The overall sound of `Pathway' has been well accomplished and produced, again having a very Swedish feel to the music. The guitar work is especially good with riffs aplenty and the rhythm section does a first-rate job. Vocalist, Freddy Persson possesses a powerful voice that is very similar to Charles Rytkönen from Morgana Lefay, but just not as gruff in places.
Overall, a pleasant album and a decent effort, however after listening to it several times there was an apparent element of obviousness that it had all been done before. For some unknown reason this album just didn't capture my imagination and interest so for the time being this album will be placed into early retirement! During the forthcoming months, I may decide to give `Pathway' another chance to redeem themselves by changing my somewhat biased opinion. I certainly would not want to discard Nostradameus into the pit of heavy metal has-beens, as I think they have so much more to offer.
